Micro-. Celebrities: Where Should the Money Go?

Micro-. Celebrities: Where Should the Money Go?

At some point every brand sits down with the budget and faces the same hard question. Should we go in on one big-name celebrity or split the money among many smaller creators?

The celebrity path feels like the choice. Everyone knows the person. The boss will love seeing a face next to the product.. Safe doesn’t always mean effective. I’ve seen many brands pay a lot for a celebrity and get almost nothing back.

Who counts as a micro-influencer?

There’s no number but most people think of creators with between 10,000 and 100,000 followers. They usually stick to a topic—like skincare, cooking, travel or tech. They reply to comments. Their followers feel like they know them. That makes trust easier.

Celebrities are the opposite. Film stars, cricketers or anyone with millions of followers. The reach is huge. The audience is broad and mixed.

What celebrities are good at,

Let’s be fair. A celebrity post can get your brand in front of millions in a day. That matters a lot for a launch. A famous face can make a new brand feel more trusted and sometimes a celebrity name brings press coverage that’s impossible to buy.

So if the goal is to make your brand known to the country a celebrity might be the right choice.

What smaller creators do better

Trust is the advantage. When a creator with 30,000 followers says a serum works it sounds like a friend’s advice. When a celebrity says it people often think it’s an ad.. Usually they’re right.

The audience is also more relevant. Someone who talks about hair care is speaking to people who already care about hair care. That’s closer to your buyers than an audience. Engagement often goes up too though not always.

Then there’s the cost. One celebrity fee can often pay for ten creators. That means content, more voices and more chances to find out what actually works.

Let’s put numbers on it

Say you have ?5,00,000 to launch a face serum.

You could spend most of it on one celebrity post. It gets millions of views and thousands of likes. Everyone is talking about it.. Most of those people don’t care about skincare. Only a small fraction ever think about buying.

You could give ?30,000 each to 15 skincare creators. Each reaches people but almost all of them are already interested in serums. You also end up with 15 posts. After a month you’ll know which creator, which message and which format actually drove sales.

Option two doesn’t win every time.. It’s easier to track easier to learn from and kinder to the budget.

The part people skip

Micro-influencers come with their problems. Fifteen creators mean fifteen conversations, fifteen contracts and fifteen posting dates. That can get exhausting fast. Quality varies too. Some are great. Others post late ignore your details. Have fake followers. You have to check before you pay.

Celebrities have issues too. The price is high. The schedule is tight.. If they get into trouble your product gets dragged along with them.

How I’d decide

Start with the goal. If it’s about prestige and making people notice go for the celebrity. If it’s about sales and trust go for creators.

Then look at the budget. A small budget on one celebrity post is risky. The same money across creators spreads the risk.

Finally ask how well you know your customer. If you can describe them clearly a niche creator can reach them better than a face ever could.

Or do both

Many brands do. The celebrity creates the buzz. Then the smaller creators follow up with reviews, tutorials and "here’s how I use it" posts. The big name makes people see you. The smaller voices make them believe you.

Bottom line

Don’t pick based on who looks best in a presentation. Pick based on who reaches people who're likely to buy. For brands, with limited money that’s often a few well-chosen micro-creators. For others one celebrity is what a launch needs.

Either way give every creator their tracking link or discount code. Then check the numbers after. That’s the real way to know who earned their fee.
